"I would have cheerfully submitted to a thousand deaths to have saved this dear child." -Henry Clay on the death of his final of six daughters

People always say "No parent should outlive their child," but that's a little like saying "No good man should ever get sick and die before 75." In the sense that it's very undesirable of course it's correct, but in the sense that it's in some way unnatural is not. Most parents to have ever lived lost a child.

On the topic of addiction: People who are so desperate to remove moral responsibility from others also remove their agency, their potency, their humanity.

“In reading The History of Nations, we find that, like individuals, they have their whims and their peculiarities, their seasons of excitement and recklessness, when they care not what they do. We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.”  -Charles MacKay

A man murdered at least 5 Christmas celebrants in Wisconsin by hitting them with his car.  He ran over a woman earlier in the month, on purpose, but his bail was set at just $1000 by a progressive DA who boasted of efforts to "reduce racial disparities in the system" and the "commitment to not keeping individuals held."  Will the left ever stop enabling savage cruelty?

"For three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain, and others.  And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want..."  -Edward Winslow:  11 December 1621

“If I am drowning in a rapid river, a man who still has one foot on the bank may give me a hand which saves my life. Ought I to shout back (between my gasps) ‘No, it’s not fair! You have an advantage! You’re keeping one foot on the bank’? That advantage—call it ‘unfair’ if you like—is the only reason why he can be of any use to me. To what will you look for help if you will not look to that which is stronger than yourself?” -CS Lewis

In five US states, more than 2% of "motor vehicle occupant traffic fatalities" involve drowning.  I was stunned to learn this.

I'd like to say something about being on the "right side" of history. There is no history. It's not a thing, or more precisely, it's so many things that it can't be said to have a discernible view.

"First, as to putting the clock back. Would you think I was joking if I said that you can put a clock back, and that if the clock is wrong it is often a very sensible thing to do? But I would rather get away from that whole idea of clocks. We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.” -CS Lewis

"When he came up I looked him in the eye, and I saw shoot, and there wasn’t shoot in nary other eye in the crowd; and so I says to myself, says I, hoss; it’s about time to sing small, and so I did.”  -Russel Bean

Andrew Jackson was accused of "racism" by his biographer Remini. And yet, when he came upon an Indian infant, he adopted the boy and planned to send him to West Point. Hmm...

"Deep inside General Andrew Jackson lay a terrible, vindictive enemy against whom the Indians would only find their graves and the confiscation of their property."  -Remini

I'm joined by Ben Tracy from Twitter (handle:  @_UnityForAll_) because he disagreed with me about criminal sentencing and I wanted to hash it out.  We talked about that last:
